Meet Monty The Meerkat
Did you ever wonder how Monty the Meerkat came to be the WMS Mascot? True to the Montessori way of doing things, our kids nominated several mascots and voted for their favorite. The meerkat won out over the pig, the kitten, the monkey and even the wildebeast! A friend of our art teacher, Laurie Muhlbauer, designed a character, and Monty was born.
As it turns out, the meerkat was the perfect choice for us. According to Tim Clutton-Brock of National Geographic, "meerkats are unique in the extent of their cooperative activities."
They will take risks to help each other, divide responsibilities among group members, and coordinate their contributions to make sure all group members pull their own weight. It is not unusual for meerkats to spend all or part of their lives helping others care for their young, and family units remain strong among the population. So, Meerkats, stand tall! We have an admirable example to live up to!
