On September 21, the Wilmington Montessori School community gathered to celebrate the U.N. International Day of Peace with a school-wide festival. The festival included participation in the Chalk4Peace program, followed by a school-wide assembly celebrating peace in both the school and greater community. At 9:30 a.m., students of all ages from toddler through 6th grade emerged from the school to draw images of peace on the pavement through the campus as a visual reminder of the school’s commitment to being a peaceful community. This activity is part of the Chalk4Peace program, which advocates for peace world-wide by encouraging young artists of all ages to draw their vision of peace in public and private spaces with sidewalk chalk. |

Wilmington Montessori students stepped out of the classroom and into a West African jamboree with renowned percussionist Tony Vacca on Feb. 4.
The concert capped-off the finale of the Artist in Residence program, in which students explored West African instruments such as the ballafone, and the musical and storytelling tradition of West African culture, said Montessori Communications Officer Noel Dietrich. Each year the Montessori school selects a different continent to study and this year they decided to focus on Africa, said Headmaster Linda Zankowski.

Percussionist Tony Vacca banged out a staccato rhythm Thursday on his West African djembe drum, as preschool children knelt on the floor in front of him at the Wilmington Montessori School, some of them bobbing their heads to the beat.
"People ask me what kind of music this is," Vacca said into a microphone in a sing-song voice as he played. "I call my music world rhythms because the world is made of rhythms. In my world, the drum is a voice. I want you to discover the power of the voice."
