Diwali - the Festival of Lights at WMS
WMS celebrated Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, on October 27.  Over the past week, parent volunteers held a series of workshops where students learned about “Rajasthani Kathputlis” - string marionettes from the western desert state of Rajasthan in India. Each student made a stick puppet, classrooms watched a small puppet show and experienced a dress up area filled with the gorgeous silks and cottons from India. The culminating event for the Diwali workshops was the celebration on the 27th.  This year the celebration introduced the ethnic dresses and musical diversity of different areas of India.  Parent volunteers and WMS students, each representing a different geographical area, showcased ethnic outfits while dancing to music from the part of India they represented. There were also student performances - dances, songs and a Kathputli show. Faculty and staff were dressed by parents in sarees and ethnic wear to share in the festivities. It was a great event allowing faculty and students to learn about and share in an important cultural holiday in India.
